I love reading TheCityFix blog. The insightful posts always teach me something new about sustainable transportation. Today is no different. In honor of International Women’s Day, they posted some excerpts from past blog posts about the intersection of gender and transportation. Since I feel a personal connection to International Women’s Day (it is a celebrated national holiday in Poland, where I grew up), I wanted to share this blog post with all of you.
Here are some excerpts:
Regarding Mexico City launching women-only transit: Following the lead of Tokyo, where the subway has implemented female-only cars so that women can avoid the unwanted gaze or grope of overly-aggressive men, Mexico City has now introduced buses reserved exclusively for women.
Live from the Clinton Global Initiative: Although not explicitly stated in the panel, ["Investing and Girls and Women,"] gender inequality permeates the transportation world. The problems female transit users face in cities a

Image : http://www.flickr.com
The motor scooter world is buzzing; Until recently gas motor scooters were the vehicle of choice for broke college students who just couldn’t afford to drive a car. With costs of owning a car skyrocketing in the past few years, many are turning to alternative transportation as a way to save fuel and insurance costs.
You might be asking yourself the question “Why are gas motor scooters so popular anyway?”. That’s an excellent question and can be summed up in two words; fuel economy. Gas motor scooters are one of the very few road legal vehicles that can get gas mileage of around 90 miles per gallon, depending on engine size. While most cars on the road have no hope of breaking the 40 mile per gallon, driving even a fuel efficient car can even be expensive.
More Features
Gas motor scooters have come a long way since their early days or air cooled two-stroke engines. With tighter emissions controls, many manufacturers of gas motor scooters have beg

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Solar, Transportation Alternatives, USA
There’s no doubt that solar energy is one of the greenest sources of electricity and the idea of using it to power transportation is not new. We’ve seen solar-powered boats and solar-powered cars before, among other things, but we didn’t know until now that a solar-powered high-speed train was on anyone’s drawing board. Apparently, it is.
Conceived as a means of zero-carbon high-speed mass transit, the Solar Bullet would travel between Tucson and Phoenix, AZ at 220 miles per hour, cutting travel times from two and a half hours (in traffic) to just 30 minutes. Taking advantage of the high amount of solar irradiance in the American Southwest, the tracks would be covered by a huge solar array to provide it with the necessary power. The SolarBullet Campaign aims to increase awareness and support among Arizonians and build a team of university experts, engineers and transit specialists to move this pro

[ Filed under Transportation or in the Concept Vehicles category ]
Most futuristic car concepts focus on smaller, aerodynamic bodies with funky shapes and forward-thinking designs. But some designers are taking futuristic cars in a different direction. This 2006 design from Alexey Bykov takes its cues from the horse-drawn carriages of years gone by. With an open-top design and single-handed joystick navigation, the Audi Quattroflex is a strangely romantic interpretation of the automobile of the future.
The central location of the joystick allows left-hand or right-hand operation of the same vehicle, meaning that it could be driven by either of the passengers. Both seats are fully adjustable, making for a very comfortable ride on both sides. The two-cylinder ride also allows for an expandable wheelbase.
The very strange-looking concept vehicle was created for the 2006 Interior Motives Design Awards, for which it took away a “Best Use of Technology

Reactionary, refers to any political or social movement or ideology that seeks a return to a previous state. It doesn't take a genius to realize that by 'previous' one is talking about the past and all of us know how the past can appear all warm and fuzzy at times. It is pure emotinalism founded upon a desire for something simpler and less frightening as the present appears to us currently. We have bloggers who hold seances with our Founding Fathers and then publish the results as posts on their blogs. They believe they have insight into what the future holds for this country by channeling a bunch of guys who died over 200 years ago. That is like taking your car to a veterinarian since 'they work' on horses: While we drive cars today there is no reason to believe that a vet cannot fix what ails your car in light of the fact that your vet treats horses, who once were the standard mode of transportation.Like Ben Franklin said, "...you have a republi
