Group B: The Lancia Delta S4 Story – Olympus Rally 1986

Click here to view the embedded video. More absorbing footage of the Lancia Delta S4 competing during the Group B era, and this time the clip is from the car's swansong World Championship event - the Olympus Rally in America. There was a sole works Martini Racing Delta entered for Markku Alen, with Italian Paolo Alessandrini driving a private example in the rally. Alen was on the cusp of becoming world champion for the first time, if he beat Peugeot Talbot Sport driver Juha Kankkunen in the United States, but this all depended on the outcome of FISA's Executive Committee meeting (regarding Peugeot's disqualification in Sanremo) to be held in eleven days time. The Lancia star would go on and win the Olympus Rally, after a gripping battle with Kankkunen (who seemed to suffer a bit of bad luck for the first time in 1986), to clinch the world title. Of course, that would all change eleven days later in Paris when FISA ruled that the Sanremo results were invalidated, meaning that Ju

Obama: Greece, facing bad days, has US as ally

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama stood with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Thursday and pledged that the United States would work with its ally, even as Greece’s enormous debts sparked frenzied trading. Papandreou said he outlined European proposals in his White House meeting and Obama reacted positively to European ideas about cracking down on currency speculation. He also said the issue would be discussed at the next meeting of the Group of 20 summit of leading and emerging economies in June. Earlier Tuesday, European officials urged the U.S. to curb certain financial instruments. A market frenzy in recent weeks saw traders make bets worth billions of dollars against the euro and on the chances of Greece not repaying its massive debts. Those market worries have undermined the 16-country currency. Papandreou said he also detailed steps that Greece has taken to reduce its deficit and reform its economy. During a reception for Greek Independence Day in the East R

WHAT KIND OF RIGHTWING RAG WOULD MAKE THIS ACCUSATION?:

Gone, Solid Gone (ROGER COHEN, 3/09/10, NY Times) The Obama presidency has been a shock to Europe. At heart, Obama is not a Westerner, not an Atlanticist. He grew up partly in Indonesia and partly in Hawaii, which is about as far from the East Coast as you can get in the United States. “He’s very much a member of the post-Western world,” said Constanze Stelzenmüller of the German Marshall Fund. The great struggles of the Cold War, which bound Europe and the United States, did not mark Obama, whose intellect and priorities were shaped by globalization, and whose feelings are tied more to the Pacific and to Africa. He can make a respectable speech on a Normandy beach, but he’s probably the first U.S. president for whom the Allied landing is emotionally remote. These truths have taken a while to sink in because Europe, in its widespread contempt for President George W. Bush, saw in Obama a savior who would restore trans-Atlantic ties. One by one European leaders have been disap

Imagine a Gigabit Philly – Another First for a City of Firsts

Take a minute, close your eyes and imagine Internet speeds reaching not megabits but gigabits. Super-fast video, more advanced Web app development. Now imagine the influence such speeds would have on a city like Philadelphia. Imagine the growth of the local technology sector and the influx of venture capital money. To the casual outsider from Europe or Asia gigabit Internet might not be all that exciting, but in the United States where the average user is on much slower megabit Internet connections, if not dialup, gigabit Internet access is a “just beyond our reach” Eden. Google is running a contest for cities to compete to be the first city to have the Internet giant’s new gigabit Internet installed in their community. Philadelphia could be it. Philadelphia is in the running for this fiber network. A group formed as a joint effort between the City of Philadelphia’s and the grassroots technology, creative and business communities called Gigabit Philly has tak
